Correcting My Pool

Routine Pool Maintenance Is An Important Safety Measure

Pool maintenance is important for extending the life of your pool and keeping up its beautiful appearance. Yet, even more important is the fact that this maintenance is essential to ensure the safety of the pool. Learn why pool owners cannot afford to forgo regular maintenance.

Deck Maintenance

Walking around a pool area comes with plenty of inherent risks given the slippery surfaces that are often present. Pool owners only add fuel to the fire when they also lack upkeep to the equation. Loose tiles, cracked tiles, or uneven concrete on the pool deck make the surface unstable, and as a result, it makes it harder for someone with wet feet to avoid a slip and fall. Pool decks should be inspected routinely and repaired or replaced whenever there is an issue.

Drain Systems

In order to keep the pool clean, the water is constantly in motion. A part of this process involves moving the water through the drainage systems so that the remaining debris can be removed. To keep the water in motion, the drain systems use suction to draw the water in. The suction does not discriminate, it will attempt to pull in anything in the area. For this reason, when the drain screen is cracked or damaged, the limb of a small child, hair, and other objects can be pulled inside, which can cause serious injury.

Chemical Imbalances

The water in a pool needs routine treatments in order to keep it balanced. If the water is unbalanced, bacteria can thrive. Bacteria-filled water puts all swimmers at risk of infection. If the chemical balance in the water is too high, there is a risk of chemical burns or skin irritation. For pools that have automatic pH balancers, it is essential these systems are working correctly to avoid these sorts of mishaps.

Electrical Systems

Water and electricity are a dangerous combination. Yet, many of a pool's systems require electricity to function. To ensure safety, however, these components are typically covered with a ground wire and/or connected to a ground fault interrupter outlet. Both these systems minimize electrocution risks. When this wire is damaged or the outlet is not working properly, there is an increased risk of electrocution. Routine maintenance can spot these problems before they become dangerous.

Make sure you do not neglect the upkeep of your pool. Be sure to speak with a pool maintenance professional to get on the right track.
